DAYTON, Ohio -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team followed a similar script in claiming a 6-1 win over Wright State Sunday.
Just as was the case Saturday at Butler, the Panthers (12-7, 5-1 Horizon) dropped the doubles point but rolled through singles play to stay in the hunt for the Horizon League regular season title.
UWM currently stands tied for second place with Cleveland State, one match behind UIC. The Flames visit Milwaukee Thursday night.
"This weekend we really played well in singles," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "To go 12-0 in singles against two very good teams is extremely hard to do. We worked very hard after our loss to Cleveland State to get tougher mentally and play with a more positive attitude. We did a great job at that this weekend."
Sunday saw Maddy Soule and Christina Colarossi start the day with a doubles win, but UWM dropped the other two doubles contests to fall behind in the match. Then, the Panthers recovered from a slow start in singles play to go 6-0. Soule, Chelsea Bailey and Colarossi again captured victories at the top of the lineup while Kelly Fritz, Kristin Kurer and Brittany Skemp added victories in the fourth, fifth and sixth spots.
"I was a little nervous heading into this match after spending so much energy against Butler Saturday," McInerney said. "We clearly started off slowly in singles but I was extremely proud of how hard we fought back and wore down a very good team"
Now, the Panthers come back home for their stiffest test of the season Thursday, with UIC having won the last 15 Horizon League titles.
"We are very excited for the opportunity to play UIC," McInerney said. "It is great to be going into the last weekend and have a shot at a tie for the conference regular season championship."
