MILWAUKEE -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee claimed the doubles point and then won five of six singles matches in convincing fashion to claim a 6-1 win over UW-Whitewater Friday at LeClub.
The Panthers (8-5) were solid throughout the match against the WIAC champions, getting back on the winning track after a pair of losses last weekend.
"I was very pleased with our intensity level and it was a good bounce back from the two matches last week," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "It was a goal of ours to play with a sense of urgency and match the intensity of a team that was going to be very excited to have the opportunity to play us. We took care of business against a quality opponent."
Maddy Soule and Christina Colarossi won for the 11th time in 13 tries at the top of the doubles lineup to help put Milwaukee ahead in the match. Then, Soule, Colarossi, Chelsea Bailey, Kristin Kurer and Brittany Skemp all captured singles victories to help the Panthers clinch the match.
"It was a good win for Maddy against an opponent that plays a very tough style. She won't see a player like that the rest of the season," McInerney said. "Our freshmen continue to play well and Kristin Kurer has been playing exceptional tennis for the last month or so."
UWM returns to action in a little over a week, squaring off with Cincinnati March 21 in Orlando. Then the Panthers face a stretch of six league matches in April heading into the league championships at the end of the month.
"The meat of our schedule awaits and the next six weeks or so will define our season," McInerney said. "We're excited for our spring break trip and Cincinnati will be a great challenge. And then we are looking forward to playing some of the top teams in the conference. We have been playing for six months to get to this point in the season and we'll find out how far we have come."
