WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team won four singles matches and a pair of doubles contests on day one of the Northern Iowa Invitational Friday.

Christina Colarossi and Maddy Soule each claimed a victory in the top singles flight to highlight the day's results.

"I was very happy with how hard we competed today," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "I was a little concerned coming into today that we would come out flat considering this was our third-straight weekend of tough invites. I think it is a great sign for our program that we were able to scrap and claw our way to a 4-2 record in singles today."

Brittany Skemp added a three-set victory in the second doubles flight, while Kristin Kurer beat Meredith McDonagh of Bradley in straight-sets.

In the top flight, Soule's victory came in three sets over Ksenia Pronina of Iowa State, while Colarossi claimed a straight-sets win over Erin Kappers of North Dakota.

"I was extremely happy that Maddy gutted out a tough three set win over a talented Iowa State player," McInerney said. "It was an important win for her and I really hope it jump starts her confidence. I am looking forward to her taking it to the next level at this invite.

"Christina played what I feel was her most complete match of the season. She played a very good player that has proven to be a very good number-one singles player for her university over the years. She is playing with great energy and learning to be a very effective college player very quickly."

Chelsea Bailey and Skemp split their two doubles outings, while Beth Ganser and Kurer did capture an 8-3 win in the second flight.

"I was a little disappointed with our doubles today," McInerney said. "I don't feel we played Milwaukee aggressive-style doubles, which we have been doing this entire first month of season. We still went 2-2 but I am hoping tomorrow brings a much better performance."
