MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team won seven singles matches and two of its three doubles contests on day two of the Minnesota Invite Saturday.
The Panthers were able to claim wins over individuals or doubles tandems from both Iowa State and Minnesota during the course of the day. Milwaukee has a singles player in a flight championship and a consolation championship as well as a doubles tandem in a third-place match heading into Sunday.
"We have come to this loaded invite and won 16 matches in the first two days and are above .500. That has been very nice to see," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "I am most happy with our doubles play. We have gone 6-3 in the first two days and have been playing the aggressive style that we will need to compete at the highest level."
In singles action, Brittany Skemp won two more matches to move into the final of the Augustus Singles Flight, while Chelsea Bailey won two contests to advance to the final of the Love Singles Flight consolation bracket. Both players claimed wins over opponents from Iowa State, with Bailey needing to rally to claim the win.
"Chelsea is such a competitor and an incredibly fast learner," McInerney said. "This was the second day in a row she has fought back against a really good opponent and forced a third-set tiebreaker. Today she did a great job, stayed calm and finished off the match 10-7 in the breaker. I am very proud of her and this was a really big win for her personally."
The day in doubles for Milwaukee was highlighted by a victory from Maddy Soule and Christina Colarossi over Minnesota in the top flight of the event.
"I was really impressed with how well they started the match, but even more impressed with their ability to withstand Minnesota's comeback," McInerney said. "They collected themselves and were able win the match. It was a great effort and I think they will only get better throughout the season."
Sunday's action starts at 9 a.m.
