MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team won four doubles matches and three singles contests on day one of the Minnesota Invitational.
The highlight of the day came in the Gray Doubles Flight, where Kristin Kurer and Chelsea Bailey won a pair of doubles contests to advance to the semifinals. The wins came against teams from Iowa State and Bradley.
"We are showing we are a good team and can play with teams at a high level," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "I am very happy and am looking forward to seeing if we can maintain this level over the next two days."
Kurer, Christina Colarossi and Brittany Skemp each won their lone singles match of the day, while Beth Ganser had a bye into the next round.
Maddy Soule and Colarossi split two doubles matches in the top flight, including a win over a team from LSU. Ganser and Kelly Fritz also split two doubles contests.
Kurer's singles win came over a player from Iowa State while Colarossi knocked off a player from LSU.
"I thought we played extremely well today," McInerney said. " I was very pleased with how we did in doubles, and Kristin and Chelsea were very good. Along with their doubles wins, Chelsea played an outstanding singles match as just a freshman and Kristin had a huge win and played exceptionally well. I was also impressed with how Christina Colarossi played, beating a very good player from LSU."
Action at the event continues Saturday morning, with the finals set for Sunday.
