DES MOINES, Iowa -
Maddy Soule and Christina Colarossi dropped a hard-fought doubles match in the championship of Flight A and the Panthers posted some strong singles performances across the board as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee competed on day two of the Drake Invitational.
Soule and Colarossi had won a pair of matches Friday to advance to the finals, but the tandem could not knock off Montse Blasco Fernandez and Carla Ventucunque of Wichita State, falling 8-3.
"It was great to get to the championship of the Flight A doubles draw," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "Maddy and Christina played well but are not currently at the level they need to be at to beat a team like that. This weekend they demonstrated they can dominate good teams but just need to become more consistent as a team."
Singles play was highlighted by wins from Soule and Kristin Kurer in their first matches of the day, as well as victories from Colarossi and Chelsea Bailey in the back draw.
"Overall I feel we competed well today, but we are not yet where we need to be against this level of competition," McInerney said. "The positive thing is we won at least one match in five out of seven singles flights today. The team is responding and working on becoming the type of players that will lead to success during conference play this spring."
