CHICAGO -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team wrapped up a successful weekend with a 4-3 win at Chicago State Saturday.
The Panthers (7-4) claimed a pair of key singles victories in winning for the second-straight day.
"This was a disappointing effort overall by our team, but we were saved by two great individual performances," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "Nothing seemed to go right for us, we didn't come ready to play and it showed. The positive is that for the seventh time this season we found a way to win. Good teams find ways to win even when they don't have their best stuff. We did that tonight and I am excited to start the bulk of our conference play and see how we stack up."
The key victories came in the second and fourth singles slots. Sammi Schoen collected a straight-sets win over Juan Rosalia Tojopraytino while Kristin Kurer rallied to beat Peggy Moore in three sets, including a tiebreaker win in the second set.
"Sammi played a tremendous singles match, beating a very good player that is having an outstanding season," McInerney said. "She is the heart and soul of this team and really stepped up and bailed the rest of the team out. Kristin fought off two match-points for the comeback win against a good and athletic player. She should have great confidence in herself after coming through as a freshman when the pressure was on."
The Panthers will take a weekend off before heading south for matches with UIC and Valparaiso on March 18.
