GREEN BAY, Wis. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team won four singles contests and the doubles point to claim a 5-2 win over Green Bay Friday in the Horizon League opener for both teams.
The Panthers (6-4, 1-0) won at second and third doubles to open the match ahead, the won at first, second, third and fifth singles to claim the contest.
"This was a very good team win for us," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "We knew Green Bay would really play hard against us and it was important for us to match their intensity. I am very happy with our effort and think it was vital to start off league play with a win against a rival and team that beat us last season."
The doubles wins came thanks to Maddy Soule and Brittany Skemp in the second slot along with Sammi Schoen and Beth Ganser in the third slot.
"Winning the doubles point in conference is going to be a major key to success," McInerney said. "I think we did a great job starting the match aggressive and maintaining that level throughout all three matches."
Then, in singles play, Maddy Soule recovered from a first-set tiebreaker to win sets two and three and send the Panthers on their way. Kelly Fritz and Sammi Schoen won in straight sets in the second and third spots before Brittany Skemp added a two-set victory in the fifth spot.
"I thought Kelly Fritz played an outstanding match for us today," McInerney said. "She has improved so much from last season and has really become a player that we can expect good results from. She has been playing very intelligent tennis and I think will be up for the challenge of conference play.
"This was our 6th win of the season which was important because we have already surpassed last seasons win total. The girls are working extremely hard and i think that we are in good position to make a run in conference."
UWM continues play this weekend with a match at Chicago State Saturday.
