ROCKFORD, Ill. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team wrapped up its weekend at the ITA Second Chance Regional with five more victories.
The day marked the end of the fall competition schedule for the Panthers, who will start their spring dual-match schedule in January.
"I was extremely pleased with how well we competed today," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "We went 5-3 on the day which included wins over Michigan State, Northern Illinois and Chicago State. We have clearly become a program that can compete with very good programs. We have a lot of work to do before January but the fall could not have gone better."
Maddy Soule led the way on Sunday with wins in singles and doubles. Her singles win allowed her to finish third in the top flight.
"Maddy had a solid win to finish third in the top flight," McInerney said. "She has been working hard on staying patient and she is slowly starting to develop the game to compete at the highest level. This win today was a testament to her willingness to gut out a match and find a way to win."
Freshman Chelsea Bailey capped a strong weekend by winning the consolation title in the second flight.
"Chelsea had an outstanding this weekend," McInerney said. "She is an extremely talented player that is learning to be a college player. She made very quick work of a good player from NIU to win the consolation title today. She is a very hard worker that is only going to get better."
In doubles action, Soule and Christina Colarossi teamed up to knock off a tandem from Michigan State, helping them claim third place in the top doubles flight.
"I think the sign of a really good tandem is the ability to find ways to win against good teams when you don't have your `A' game," McInerney said. "They struggled at times but supported each other executed down the stretch for the big win."
Kristin Kurer also claimed another singles win, while Kelly Fritz and Bailey teamed up to clinch the consolation championship in the second doubles flight.
