WATERLOO, Iowa -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team tested itself against top-flight competition on day one of the Northern Iowa Invitational Friday.
In a field filled with teams from the Big 12 and Big Ten, the Panthers got a singles win from Megan Gow and a doubles victory from a pair of tandems.
Action at the event continues through Sunday.
"Day one was solid for us," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "The competition level here is extremely high and we had some very tough matchups early and showed well. In five out of our seven singles matches, we either played a Big Ten or a Big 12 opponent and I was very happy with how close we played them."
The singles win by Gow came in straight sets over a player from South Dakota. Gow and Sammi Schoen then teamed up for one of the doubles victories, while Maddy Soule and Kelly Fritz had the other win.
"In singles we are starting to show we can compete with anyone, but we just can't finish at this level yet," McInerney said. "We are getting closer but it is something that has to drastically improve if we are going to compete for a conference title in the spring. In doubles we were much improved over the last invite. Along with their win, Maddy and Kelly lost 9-7 to Missouri's top doubles team and the victory by Sammi and Megan was a good one. I am look forward to seeing them compete again Saturday."
