INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee claimed a 4-2 win over Green Bay Friday in the first round of the Horizon League Women's Tennis Championships at North Central High School.
The Panthers (10-11) won the doubles point and then won three singles contests to wrap up the contest.
The deciding victory came at #2 singles, where Kari Kastenholz pulled out a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Emily Lawent.
Kastenholz was also part of the Panthers' key doubles victory, as she teamed with Kelly Drvaric to overcome a 5-2 deficit in an 8-6 win in the top slot.
UWM, the sixth seed in the event, now advances to play third-seeded Detroit Saturday at 9 a.m. EDT/8 a.m. CDT.
"I am definitely happy with the win but we will have to play better to beat Detroit Saturday," UWM head coach Matt McCaskill said. "The wind is making the conditions tough, but it is the same for everyone. It was a very nice effort at doubles for us, and winning that point makes the rest of the match that much easier."
In addition to the doubles win by Drvaric and Kastenholz, UWM got an 8-5 doubles victory from Sammi Schoen and Ashley Schoneman. Meanwhile, Schoen and Megan Gow claimed the other two singles points for the Panthers. Schoen won, 6-2, 6-0, at #3 singles while Gow captured a convincing, 6-0, 6-1, win in the sixth slot.
This was the fifth-straight win for Milwaukee over Green Bay. The streak comes after the Panthers dropped their first 22 Division I meetings with the Phoenix.
