CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee claimed a singles point and a doubles match but could not break through in the other close contests in falling, 6-1, to Northern Iowa Sunday.
The Panthers (3-3) pushed two singles matches to a third set and another contest to a tiebreaker in the second set, but UWM could not pull out a victory in any of those matchups.
Jenna Felsher did capture UWM's lone singles victory, claiming a 6-4, 3-2 (ret.) win over Diana Mendez in the sixth slot. In doubles play, the top Panther tandem of Kelly Drvaric and Kari Kastenholz claimed an 8-6 win over Mendez and Sampada Kanade.
Ashley Schoneman pushed Jessica Kunzelmann to the limit at #4 singles before falling, 4-6, 6-1, 10-3. Then, Megan Gow did the same with Taynara Moraes in the number-five slot, dropping a 6-2, 4-6, 14-12 decision. UWM's other best chance for another singles point came in the #2 slot, where Kari Kastenholz fell, 6-2, 7-6 (5), to Kanade.
"The overall match was definitely a lot closer than the 6-1 score would indicate," UWM head coach Matt McCaskill said. "I thought we competed as well as we have this season. Northern Iowa is a good team, probably in the top three or four of the Missouri Valley. It was a great performance by us and we could have made it 4-3 or maybe even pulled out the win."
UWM will play just one match this weekend, squaring off with Illinois State at Marquette on Saturday.
