MILWAUKEE -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team dropped a disappointing 5-2 decision to Ball State Friday night at the Paley Tennis Center.
The Panthers (4-5) lost the doubles point and then came up short in three, 3-set singles contests to fall to the Cardinals.
Kari Kastenholz and Jenna Felsher claimed the two points for Milwaukee, with each player winning a singles match. Kastenholz won hers in three sets, capturing a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory over Dena Boylieris at #2 singles. Then, Felsher claimed a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Rachel Surowiec at #6 singles.
Meanwhile, Ashley Schoneman and Sammi Schoen claimed an 8-1 win at #2 doubles, but Milwaukee was unable to capture the doubles point. Kastenholz and Kelly Drvaric lost, 8-6, at #1 doubles while Felsher and Megan Gow fell, 8-5, at #3 doubles.
"This was a tough loss to a gutsy Ball State team," UWM head coach Matt McCaskill said. "I knew the doubles point would be key and we came out slow in a couple of those matches. Then, we lost three of the four singles matches that went to three sets, so it is just too tough to get the victory. It was a disappointing loss because I thought, for the most part, Ball State played with more intensity than we did."
UWM returns to action Sunday morning, facing off with IPFW at the Paley Tennis Center.
