INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee dropped a 4-1 decision to Detroit in the second round of the Horizon League Women's Tennis Championship Saturday afternoon at North Central High School.
The third-seeded Titans claimed a tight doubles point and then wrapped up the contest by winning three of the first four singles matches.
The sixth-seeded Panthers (13-12) were in position themselves to pull out the victory had they been able to claim the doubles point. Along with a win by Kelly Drvaric in the number-one slot, Kari Kastenholz was leading at #3 singles and Jenna Felsher was ahead at #6 singles when the Titans clinched the match.
"We played well but that doubles point was certainly the key," UWM head coach Matt McCaskill said. "We've been stressing the doubles point all season long and today provided a good example of how important it can be. We were in position to get three wins in singles, so winning that point in doubles might have pushed us over the top."
Still, there was plenty for McCaskill to be happy about with his team in position to capture a school-record 14th team win against Green Bay in the fifth-place match later Saturday. Drvaric's win was an impressive 6-4, 6-2 dispatching of Aneta Maricevic. Meanwhile, Kastenholz won the first set of her contest, 7-5, and was tied 3-3 in the second set against Annie Moore. And, Jenna Felsher had a 6-1, 4-4 lead in her match when play was stopped as the Titans clinched the win.
On the doubles side, Sammi Schoen and Felsher captured an 8-6 win in the number-two slot while Drvaric and Kastenholz had a late lead at #1 doubles before falling, 9-7.
"We have nothing to be ashamed of," McCaskill said. "It was nice to see Kelly bounce back with a win and Kari was ahead of a former league player of the year. We'll be ready for Green Bay later today and certainly getting that school record for wins is a goal to shoot for this afternoon."
The contest between the Panthers and Phoenix is set to begin at approximately 4 p.m. EDT.
