INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team advanced to the fifth-place match of the Horizon League Championship with a 4-1 win over Wright State Saturday afternoon.
The win was the first in a league tournament match for the Panthers (12-10) since 2000, while it also helped UWM establish a new Division I school record for wins.
Milwaukee will now take on Youngstown State in the consolation bracket final Sunday morning in Indianapolis, with UWM looking for its best league tournament finish since 1998.
UWM had dropped its opening match in the league tournament earlier Saturday, falling 4-0 to Cleveland State.
In the victory over Wright State, UWM got singles victories from Ali O'Neal, Lauren Fenley and Elizabeth Angel while also claiming the doubles point. For O'Neal, it was her school-record 18th singles victory of the season. Meanwhile, Angel captured wins in both singles and doubles despite just returning to the active roster this week. She was added to fill out a Panther squad left shorthanded by an injury to freshman Ashley Schoneman.
All three of UWM's singles wins against the Raiders came in straight sets. In doubles action against WSU, Kari Kastenholz and O'Neal teamed up for an 8-6 win in the #1 slot while Fenley and Angel paired up for an 8-2 win at #3 doubles.
In the match against Cleveland State, the Panthers could not pull through with a win but both Drvaric and Kastenholz had pushed their matches into the third set when the Vikings secured a fourth team point, keeping those contests from finishing.
"It was a very nice day for Kari and Kelly, even though their singles matches didn't finish. Plus, Ali put together a great effort in the clinching match this afternoon," UWM head coach Matt McCaskill said. "You also can't say enough about Elizabeth Angel just coming back to the team this week and going 2-0 in the match against Wright State. I'm very proud of our team and it is nice to have the season last another day. It's been a very good year and these players deserve the chance to keep on playing."
