MILWAUKEE -
The University Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team wrapped up its regular season schedule today against the University Illinois-Chicago Flames. UIC staked its claim as the top team in the Horizon League with a 6-0 victory over the Panthers.
In singles play, the Panthers couldn't capitalize on any singles victories, however the team showed much resilience. Leading the way was Tammie Spiel, who was unable to compete in doubles action due to tendonitis of the wrist, but displayed her toughness by competing in singles action.
"Tammie played really well today considering her injury," head coach Erika Wentz said.
In doubles action, the Panthers were unable to keep up with the Flames, losing both matches. In the #1 spot, Margie Van Lieshout and Cassie Kuranz battled hard against the Flame's dup of Jaklin/Gumuscu, dropping an 8-4 decision.
"I thought they competed well today, " Wentz said. "We never gave up and kept on fighting."
The final match of the regular season also marked the final match for senior, Cassie Kuranz. Kuranz has been one of the Panthers top performers this year, leading the team in singles wins.
"Cassie is going to missed," Wentz said. "She's been one of our toughest competitors throughout the course of the season."
UWM wraps up its season next weekend, as they will travel to Indianapolis for the Horizon League Championships.
