MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tennis team won its first match of the season, defeating IPFW, 5-2 Sunday afternoon. After receiving one team point, thanks in part to two doubles wins, the Panthers reeled off four singles wins, on route to its first win of the season.

"The girls played very smart today, "UWM head coach Erika Wentz said. "Today was a much needed win."

After starting the season off 0-4, the Panthers looked to the consistent doubles team of Tammie Spiel and Megan Brown to jump-start the day. The duo won a decisive 8-0 victory, their third of the season. The doubles excitement didn't stop there, however, as Melissa Hackett and Kristen Bauknecht won a tight 8-5 decision, giving the Panthers one team point.

"#2 and #3 doubles are continuing to do very well." Wentz said.

In #1 singles action, UWM sophomore, Margie Van Lieshout, defeated IPFW's Francesca Solari, 7-6 (3), 6-2.

"Margie pulled out a big match," Wentz said. "She had lost to her in the fall."

Tammie Spiel continued UWM's march playing in the #2 spot, as she defeated Jill Carie, 6-2, 6-1. Playing the #3 slot, UWM's Megan Brown won convincingly, 6-2, 6-1, over IPFW's Michelle Humphrey. Cassie Kuranz continues to play well, as she downed Lisa Bartelheim, 6-4, 6-2, in three sets.

The Panthers return to action next weekend as they travel to Ohio to face Cleveland State and Youngstown State.
