The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team swept Missouri-Kansas City, 7-0, Saturday in Chicago, ending the school's 28-match losing streak, dating back to March 30, 2001.
Alyssa Halcomb collected her third win of the season at No. 1, defeating Yelena Podorozhansky in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Margie Van Lieshout also picked up her third win, defeating Molli Boyd at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1. At third singles, Tammie Spiel picked up her first win of the season, defeating Anna Grodzinsky, 6-0, 6-1, while Molly Caulk won for the first time in the past year and a half, defeating Amy Bing, 7-6, 6-3. Megan Brown picked up the win at No. 5 singles, defeating Sarena Apte, 6-0, 6-0. Erin Felber was credited with the win at No. 6 singles, winning by default.
In doubles play, the Panthers won at No. 2 singles, 8-1, as Erin Felber and Cassie Kuranz won over Amy Bing and Sarena Apte. The clinching match was the No. 3 doubles match, which UWM won by default. Van Lieshout and Caulk were leading the match at No. 1 doubles, 7-4, over Podorozhansky and Boyd before the match was stopped due to rain.
UWM put an end to a losing streak that spanned a year and a half, including the final nine matches of the 2000-01 season and the entire 2001-02 campaign. The Panthers dropped their first dual match of the year at UW-Whitewater on Sept. 21 before ending the streak on Saturday.
The Panthers will look to continue their winning ways Saturday when they travel to Indianapolis for a pair of matches. UWM will face IUPUI at 9 a.m., before taking on the University of Indianapolis at 2 p.m.
