Milwaukee Men Climb to Second, Win 4x400 Relay Title at Horizon League Indoor Championships

March 01, 2026

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Milwaukee track & field team wrapped up day two of championship action at the Horizon League Indoor Championships hosted by Youngstown State Sunday.

"I thought the guys really stepped up on day two to earn that podium team finish," said head coach Andrew Basler. "We lost some points after day one, and our men rallied together today. I think of the 26 men we took to the championship, only three are seniors."

The Panthers finished second (83 points) out of eight teams, jumping up two spots from the day-one standings. This marks Milwaukee's third consecutive runner-up finish.

In the final event of the championships, the team of Karsten Grundahl, Matt Scardina, Zac Schmidt, and Ty Bauschelt won the 4x400-meter relay, recording the fourth-fastest time in program history with a mark of 3:15.65.

Bauschelt shined in his first Horizon League Championship, winning the 400-meter dash. His time of 47.77 ranks fourth in program history. Schmidt also competed in the finals of the event, turning in a fifth-place effort (48.64).

In the 800-meter run, Grundahl secured key points for the Black & Gold with his second-place finish. He clocked a time of 1:52.44.

In the Heptathlon, freshmen Trevor Boyer and Trent Oiler turned in sixth and seventh-place efforts. Only one point separated the two, with Boyer earning 4326 points and Oiler nabbing 4325.

Bauschelt continued his momentum with a fourth-place effort in the high jump, clearing 2.00 meters.

Milwaukee placed three jumpers in the top-eight of the triple jump, with Kyril Griffin leading the effort. He earned second with a personal-best 14.56-meter outing, a mark that ranks tenth in the program record books for the event. Bishop Bufford and Tyler Dahlie rounded out the impressive finishes for Milwaukee, securing fourth place (14.32 meters) and sixth place (13.89 meters).

Aiden Janke secured a top-five finish for the Black & Gold, throwing 14.99 meters in the shot put.

Two Milwaukee runners cracked the top-10 in the mile run, with Sam Schreiber and Harper Fahey finishing sixth (4:13.72) and ninth (4:14.37), respectively. Both runners turned in career-best times for the Panthers.

Bauschelt and Scardina earned additional points for the Black & Gold in the 200-meter finals. Bauschelt ended seventh (22.56) while Scardina secured eighth (22.76).

"I spoke to the teams afterwards about the importance of details and what it truly means to be united as a team and fully support the cause," added Basler. "With that said, I'm very proud of the efforts put forth this weekend and the support the team showed for each other."

Basler concluded by saying, "I'd like to thank all my assistant coaches… Coaches Hatch, Schultz, Schmidt, Johnson, Howard, and Rogalski. They do an amazing job pouring into our team. I'd also like to thank our support staff of athletic trainers who work to make sure our athletes are staying healthy."
