Cygan Champs Day 1 Recap

February 28, 2026

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Milwaukee track & field team competed in day one of the Horizon League Indoor Championships hosted by Youngstown State inside the Watson and Tressel Training Site.

"Overall, I think we would have liked to see a little bit more happen for us as a team after day one," said head coach Andrew Basler. "But we are not out of it heading into day two which is a great position to be in at championships."

At the end of the first day of action, the Panthers sit fourth in the standings, earning 15 points.

"The big highlight was Josh Cygan's 6th round throw to claim the title," added Basler. "The energy and support from his teammates was great to see. Great job to Coach Howard and Coach Rogalski for preparing Josh for that moment."

The Black & Gold were led by Josh Cygan who won the Horizon League title in the weight throw. Cygan recorded a personal-best 17.83-meter toss which ranks fourth in the Panther record books.

The Panthers will see three athletes compete in the finals of the 400-meter dash Sunday. Ty Bauschelt recorded the top time in the prelims for the event, running a career-best 48.40. Anthony Buford crossed the line third (48.79) with a personal-best effort, while Zac Schmidt ended sixth (49.11).

Bauschelt will also race in the finals of the 200-meter dash after finishing third in the prelims. He clocked a time of 21.88, which currently ranks 10th in the program record books for the event. Matt Scardina will compete in the finals as well after an eighth-place outing (22.53).

In the 800-meter run, Karsten Grundahl turned in a finals-qualifying time of 1:53.84, finishing fourth.

Bradyn Thomas nabbed fifth place in the pole vault, clearing 4.55 meters.

Alexander Maggit and Kyril Griffin both cracked the top-10 in the long jump, finishing ninth (6.78 meters) and 10th (6.73 meters), respectively.

"I anticipate a crazy amount of energy from our team tomorrow as we close out the indoor championships," concluded Basler.
