PREVIEW: Panthers Travel to Joe Piane Invitational

Milwaukee set to compete in Gold Division Races

October 01, 2026

MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee cross country program is back in action for its second meet in as many weeks, competing at the Joe Piane Invitational Friday, Oct. 2, at the Burke Golf & Cross Country Course, hosted by Notre Dame.

The Panthers are set to battle in the Gold Division, with the women's race slated to start at 11:00 a.m. CT, followed by the men's competition at 11:40 a.m. CT. Fans can find more information on Friday's meet, here. The team will race against fellow Horizon League foes in Cleveland State, Northern Illinois, Oakland, Green Bay and Purdue Fort Wayne.

Milwaukee is fresh off of a quality showing at the Jim Allen Classic, hosted by Marquette at nearby Veterans Park. For the women, Mariah Wondra put together the strongest performance of the day, slicing off 36 seconds from her previous personal best in the 6K, tallying a fifth-place finish.

The Bonduel, Wis. native was the second member of the Horizon League to cross the finish line with a time of 22:59.2. Janiyah Taylor also finished in the top-10, placing eighth after covering the course in 23:07.1.

The freshmen have continued to step up on the women's side, as newcomers Grace Storjohann, Leah Gonwa and Avery Sommer each scored points for the Panthers at the Jim Allen Classic, too.

On the men's team, four of the seven racers competed in this meet last season, highlighted by Cullen Boyle and Alex Anewenter. Boyle was the first Panther to complete a shortened 7K course last week, finishing in eighth.

Anewenter followed right behind to earn 10th, good for his first top-10 finish in a cross country race in his collegiate career. Will Whiteis and Harper Fahey return as two athletes who have also competed at the Joe Piane Invitational. Fahey notched a career best at Notre Dame last season in the 8K, turning in a time of 26:04.8.

Milwaukee will return to competition in two weeks, as they are set to take on the Bradley Pink Classic Friday, Oct. 16.
