MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee men's track & field team battled at the 13th annual Tierney Classic in the Klotsche Center Sunday.
"The Tierney Classic is one of our favorite competitions of the year. Our team gets to perform in front of family, friends, and alumni. It's a special day honoring the commitment and sacrifice of our seniors and interacting with our great alumni base," said head coach
Andrew Basler.
"
Josh Cygan unleashed a monster PR in the weight throw. In the 800-meter dash, Karsten and Lucas battled to the line in an exciting race," added Basler.
Cygan got the Panthers rolling early with his electric weight throw outing. The sophomore recorded a 17.45m effort, winning the event while recording the sixth-best throw in program history.
The field event success continued for the Black & Gold with
Aiden Janke in the shot put. Janke's 15.09m throw put him at the top of the leaderboard for the day.
Anthony Buford continued his strong sophomore campaign with a first-place outing in the long jump. This effort ranks as the fifth-best jump in program history, sits first in the Horizon League, and gives him a new indoor career-best.
Freshmen
Ty Bauschelt and
Tyler Dahlie dueled it out in the high jump, taking the top two spots with clearances of 1.95m and 1.90m, respectively.
Matt Scardina came away with the crown in the 60-meter dash (7.03). Scardina was the only runner at the meet to record a sub-seven-second performance in the event with his 6.99 prelim showing.
Liam Richards competed unattached at the meet and came away with a win in the 60-meter hurdles (8.48), narrowly edging out teammate
Brendan Vlasak (8.49) for the victory.
Karsten Grundahl and
Lucas Picco were neck and neck in the 800-meter dash. Grundahl came out on top (1:54.10), and Picco finished runner-up (1:54.18).
The 4x400m team of
Zac Schmidt,
Kieran Schindler,
Mason Weaver, and Picco secured the crown with their 3:28.52 effort.
Kyril Griffin bested his previous career-high, set just a week ago, in the triple jump with his 14.31m showing at the meet.
"Overall, a lot of progress was made today. We will be traveling a smaller group this upcoming weekend to a great opportunity at the University of Iowa. Lastly, I want to personally thank our athletic department staff, university recreation staff, my assistant coaches, and our team for their help in putting together a great event for our program," concluded Basler.
