Panthers Gear Up for 13th Annual Tierney Classic

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee track & field teams will continue their indoor seasons when they host the 13th annual Tierney Classic in the Klotsche Center Sunday.
 
The meet will kick off with the field events at 10:00 a.m., followed by a senior day celebration at 1:30 p.m. The track events will commence after the celebration at 2:00 p.m.
 
LAST TIME OUT
 
The Panthers last competed at the Minnesota Open in Minneapolis on Saturday, Jan. 10. The meet featured four podium sweeps by the Black & Gold, three for the men and one for the women.
 
The men's team was led by Lucas Picco and Kyril Griffin, who were each named Horizon League Athlete of the Week after impressive showings at the Minnesota Fieldhouse. Griffin delivered a pair of podium finishes, taking second in the triple jump (14.24m) and third in the long jump with a career-high leap of 6.84 meters.
 
Picco received his second conference weekly award of the indoor season after crossing the finish line first in the 800-meter dash, clocking a time of 1:55.64.
 
The Panther men recorded three podium sweeps on the day, coming in the 1-mile, 200-meter dash, and 3000-meter run. Harper Fahey led the way in the 1-mile, securing the victory with a career-best time of 4:23.95. Zach Schmidt followed with a top overall finish in the 200-meter dash, clocking a swift 22.63. Rounding out the sweep, freshman Alex Anewenter captured the 3000-meter title with a time of 8:55.67, marking the first individual indoor victory of his Panther career.
 
The women were led by Anna Szepieniec and Olivia VanZeeland, who are coming off their second Horizon League Athlete of the Week nods. Szepieniec competed in the 60-meter hurdles where she took first, completing the sprint over 0.3 seconds faster than the next runner.
 
VanZeeland has been perfect in the high jump this season, winning both of her outings, including a first-place clearance of 1.73 meters in Minneapolis. She currently leads the Horizon League in the event.
 
The Panther women completed a podium sweep in the 1-mile race, led by Janiyah Taylor's winning performance of 5:22.51. Lauren Ripley and Rohan Flanagan rounded out the sweep for the Black & Gold.

The Panthers will look ahead to the Fighting Illini Challenge in Urbana-Champaign, Ill., on Jan. 22-23 and the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, on Jan. 23-24.
