Panthers Will Begin 2026 Campaign at Minnesota Open

January 08, 2026

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee indoor track & field team will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to the Minnesota Fieldhouse in Minneapolis, Minn., for the Minnesota Open.

The meet hosted by Minnesota will be the second outing for the team this season. The Black & Gold will compete against Minnesota as well as Northern Iowa, with the first events scheduled to take place at 10:00 a.m.

LAST TIME OUT

In the season-opening meet in Chicago, Ill., the Panthers were powered by a standout performance from Anna Szepieniec, who claimed three individual victories at DePaul's Blue Demon Holiday Invite. The junior topped the podium in the 60-meter hurdles (8.53), the 200-meter dash (24.68), and the long jump (5.76m).

Szepieniec wasted no time etching her name into the Panther record books, as her 60-meter hurdles prelim time of 8.49 ranks second all-time in program history, while her 200-meter dash performance stands as the third-fastest ever for Milwaukee.

Olivia VanZeeland and Leah Handshoe also turned in first-place outings for the Black & Gold. VanZeeland cleared 1.72m in the high jump, a mark that was good for fourth best in the Milwaukee record books, while Handshoe recorded an impressive time of 56.88 in the 400-meter dash.

The Milwaukee men saw multiple athletes secure the top spot on the podium, with Anthony Buford leading the charge. The reigning Horizon League Indoor Freshman Field Athlete of the Year cleared 7.01m in the long jump, taking home first place in the event.

In the high jump, Ty Bauschelt and Caden Thomas both jumped 1.98m, taking spots one and two, while freshman Tyler Dahlie finished right behind them with his 1.93m effort to take third.

Other athletes to finish first for the Black & Gold included Lucas Picco in the 600-meter dash (1:19.81) and Brendan Vlasak in the 60-meter hurdles (8.19).

Milwaukee swept the weekly Horizon League awards with its convincing performance at the meet hosted by DePaul, with Picco and Szepieniec earning Runner of the Week nods and Buford and VanZeeland landing Field Athlete of the Week honors.
