Panthers Earn Four Horizon League Athlete of the Week Honors

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee track & field teams swept the Horizon League Under Armour Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards for the second time this season after an impressive performance at the Minnesota Open. The awards were announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
 
Anna Szepieniec and Lucas Picco earned Runner of the Week honors, while Kyril Griffin and Olivia VanZeeland were named Field Athletes of the Week.
 
Szepieniec earned her second Horizon League weekly award of her junior campaign after a dominant performance in Minneapolis. Szepieniec took home first place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.67, finishing over 0.3 seconds faster than the next runner.
 
Picco also received his second Horizon League Runner of the Week nod, this time for his performance in the 800-meter dash. Picco crossed the line first, clocking a time of 1:55.64, which currently ranks him third in the Horizon League for the event.
 
Receiving his first Horizon League Male Field Athlete of the Week award is Griffin, who turned in a second-place performance in the triple jump, clearing 14.24 meters. Griffin's triple jump effort currently ranks second in the Horizon League. Griffin also found a spot on the podium in the long jump (6.84 meters) where he finished third.
 
VanZeeland is the Horizon League Female Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. The senior cleared 1.73 meters in the high jump, turning in a first-place effort. This outing by VanZeeland puts her at the top of the Horizon League high jump leaderboard as well as 46th in the NCAA.
