INDIANAPOLIS – On Wednesday, the Horizon League announced its All-Academic team for the 2022-23 Indoor Track & Field season with the Milwaukee programs leading the conference with 11 All-Academic Selections.
The Panther women's track & field program had a league-best seven selections as
Natalie Block,
Annie Guerrero,
Cynthia Hernandez,
Lauren Lietzke,
Dominique Thomas,
Kate Watson, and
Tabitha Wechlo all earned recognition from the Horizon League.
The Milwaukee men had four selections with
Caleb Henry,
Gracien Jules,
Anthony Kessler, and
Trevor Wenzel earning All-Academic Honors.
Milwaukee's 11 is trailed by Youngstown State with 10 overall honorees, while Oakland had six, IUPUI had five and Detroit Mercy and Purdue Fort Wayne each with four. Cleveland State had two honorees while Robert Morris and Wright State each had one earn accolades.
Teams were comprised of 16 selections apiece, with ties unbroken. A total of 35 selections from across the Horizon League were selected this year with an additional nine honorees garnering Honorable Mention. Eligibility requirements include a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 on a 4.00 scale, the student-athlete must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's overall contests and must have completed at least one year at their respective institutions.
Block was named Alfreeda Goff Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season and earns her first indoor All-Academic Team honor. Block set Horizon League Championship Meet and Milwaukee Program record in 60m hurdles with time of 8.33 seconds. She also set program records in 200m dash (24.57), 300m dash (38.67), and 400m dash (55.30) during the winter season. She helped the team with 36 points in five events at the Horizon League Championships, including two of her nine individual wins on the season, including six wins in the 60m hurdles. Block currently has a 3.47 GPA.
Guerrero earns her second consecutive All-Academic Team honor after being a member of the All-Academic team in 2022. Guerrero recorded seven points in the high jump at the Horizon League Championships and had two individual victories in the high jump this season. Earlier this season, Guerrero was also a one-time Horizon League Field Athlete of the Week. Guerrero has a 3.70 GPA.
Hernandez recorded eight points in the weight throw at the Horizon League Championships. Hernandez had three top-five finishes in the weight throw on the season, which included her second-place finish at the Horizon League Championships. Hernandez currently has a 4.00 GPA.
Lietzke also earned her third All-Academic Team selection, after earning honors in both 2021 and 2022. At this year's Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships, Lietzke was named Outstanding Field Performer as she recorded 20 Points with two wins at the championship meet. This winter Lietzke had saved her best for last with two individual victories in total on the season with wins in the shot put and weight throw. Lietzke has a 3.59 GPA.
Thomas registered six points in two Events at this season's Horizon League Championships, as she earns her first-ever Indoor All-Academic Team honors. On the season, Thomas two individual victories and had nine top-three finishes in two events, including five in the 60m dash and four in the 200m dash. Thomas currently has a 3.87 GPA.
Watson wraps up her indoor career with her first Indoor All-Academic Team selection. This year Watson set the Horizon League Championship Meet and Milwaukee Program record in Pole Vault at 4.05 meters as she helped the team record 10 Points towards the team's point total. Watson had three individual victories in the pole vault this winter and was a two-time Horizon League Field Athlete of the Week. Watson has a 3.58 GPA.
Wechlo helped Milwaukee add nine points in her two events at the Horizon League Championships this winter. Wechlo had three individual victories in the shot put this season and had eight finishes in the top-five in two events, with six coming in the shot put and two coming in the weight throw. Wechlo currently has a 3.89 GPA.
Henry earns his first All-Academic Team nor after garnering Honorable Mention accolades in 2022. At this year's Horizon League Championship, he helped add 11 points to Milwaukee's team total. During the season he had five top-five finishes including three in the 400m dash and twice in the 4x400 relay. Henry has a 3.69 GPA.
Jules was also an All-Academic Honorable Mention in 2022 as he earns his first indoor All-Academic Team nod. He added seven points in two events to Milwaukee's team total at the championship meet. This season he had four top-five finishes in the shot put. Jules currently has a 3.55 GPA.
Kessler earns his first All-Academic Team recognition as he helped the team earn one point at the Horizon League Championships, while also breaking into the Milwaukee Top-10 in the 60m dash with a time of 6.96. This indoor season he had three top-two finishes including twice in the 200m dash and once in the 60m dash. Kessler has a 3.46 GPA.
Wenzel makes it a three-peat after being named to the All-Academic Team in both 2021 and 2022 before his third selection this season. The distance runner recorded 12 points over two events at this season's Horizon League Championship, while he also set the program record this winter in the 5000m run with a time of 14:25.31. He had one individual victory in the 3000m run, and had five top-five finishes with three in the 3000m run and two in the 5000m run. Wenzel currently has a 3.79 GPA.
