RALEIGH, N.C. – The Milwaukee men's and women's track and field teams each sent one distance runner to the Raleigh Relays on Thursday evening, posting one school record in the process.
In the men's 5000m run,
Trevor Wenzel set a new school record with a run of 14:28.02 placing 96th overall out of 223 competitors. Wenzel was the second highest Horizon League runner to finish at the meet. The time broke the previous program record from 2015 when Marcus Paulson posted a time of 14:31.40.
"It was a great start to our outdoor season with Trevor breaking the school record," head coach
Andrew Basler said. "I thought he ran a great race, and I think he still had some left in him had he been in a faster race but we're looking forward to seeing him drop that time even more come outdoor conference."
Mikayla Fox competed in the women's 10,000m run, placing 59th in the field of 85 runners. Fox tallied a time of 35:34.53, finishing just shy of her previous personal best.
"Mikayla ran a good race," Basler said. "Just off her lifetime best and I think she was about seventy seconds faster than when she ran it last year at this time. I'm happy with how she performed, and these meets where we bring a select few we're looking for them to step up and I felt like they both did exactly what they were hoping to do."
Milwaukee will split the squad to open April, with distance runners competing at the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis, Missouri on April 1. The rest of the team will head to the two-day Redbird Invite in Normal, Illinois hosted by Illinois State on April 1-2.
