INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – On the third day of the Horizon League Championships, the Milwaukee men's and women's swim and dive teams recorded several strong swims and tallied a runner-up finish on the one-meter board.
After three days of competition, the Panthers women hold a second-place spot with 424.5 points. IUPUI is the next closest team with 366 points. The men are currently in seventh with 179.5 points.
The women's team sent nine swimmers and two divers to the A-finals on Friday along with seven more to the B-finals. The men had eight competing in the B-finals throughout the day.
"Yesterday's momentum set us up for today," Head coach
Kyle Clements said. "As a team we were ready to swim this morning and it sent a lot of Panthers into the finals. We had at least one if not multiple people in every event, and that's amazing. We cannot wait for tomorrow's sessions."
After earning a silver on the three-meter to open the championships,
McKenzie Sanchez added her second runner-up finish, this time on the one-meter board with a score of 285.85.
Julie Rebek finished sixth in the finals at 250.35 points while
Therese Missiaen finished third in the consolation at 213.85 points.
In the women's 100m butterfly,
Bella Passamani and
Molly Meland each competed in the A-finals. Passamani touched the wall at 55.90 seconds to place sixth, which ranks fifth all-time on the top-10 list. Meland was close behind, finishing eighth at 56.56.
Bri Zablocki (57.26) and
Kelen McDaniels (57.58) placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the B-finals in the event.
The Panther men sent three swimmers to the B-final in the 100m fly, with
Zach McClellan posting a runner-up finish at 49.29 seconds.
Jacob Weber placed seventh with a time of 50.27 and
Hayden Christiansen was one spot behind for eighth at 50.93.
Giulia Guerra-Montes cut over two seconds off her prelims time in the 400IM to finish sixth in the A-finals with a mark of 4:32.88.
Jay Jensen earned his second B-final runner-up finish of the championships with an impressive time of 3:56.40 in the 400 IM. That time is now the second-fastest time in program history and improves upon Jensen's previous personal best by over three seconds.
Milwaukee was busy in the women's 100m backstroke, with three competing in the A-finals.
Skylar Ruggles advanced to the finals with a time of 56.12 in the prelims, a mark that puts her third all-time in the top-10. She finished third in the finals, touching the wall at 56.30.
Riley Melendy placed sixth at 56.55 while Meland (57.95) earned her second 8th-place finish in the A-finals on the afternoon.
Hayden Christiansen was sixth in the B-finals of the 100m backstroke, recording a time of 50.78 seconds.
In the 100m breaststroke,
Makaila Scheiblein finished fourth in the A-finals at 1:03.8 while
Betsy Weil was eighth in the A-final with a time of 1:04.93. On the men's side,
Brian Knothe (57.85) finished eighth in the B-final.
Sydney Dahl was the final Panther to swim in the A-finals, finishing sixth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.96.
Meghan Jagdfeld (1:52.34) was the runner-up in the B-final at 1:52.34 with
Cassandra Hutchins close behind at 1:52.60 and finishing third.
Allie Buytendorp finished sixth in the B-final with a time of 1:53.71.
In the men's 200 free,
Andrew Innerebner placed third in the B-final with a time of 1:40.70.
Jonathan Kollen (1:41.83) and
Mason Schoof (1:42.56) finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the B-finals.
The day concluded with the 400 medley relays. The women's team of Ruggles, Scheiblein, Passamani, and Caras tallied a third-place finish with a season-best time of 3:46.62. The men placed sixth, as Christiansen, Knothe, McClellan, and Jensen recorded a time of 3:23.58.
The final day of the league championships concludes tomorrow, with swimming prelims once again beginning at 9 a.m. CST followed by diving prelims at 12 p.m. Finals of the events will begin at 4:30 p.m. and be aired on ESPN+. Saturday's events include the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, men's three-meter dive, and 400 free relay.
