CHICAGO, Ill. – The Milwaukee men's track and field team began the indoor season on Friday, with Panthers' turning in multiple top 10 finishes in the opener.
"This is the first time in my five years as head coach at Milwaukee that we've gone to a December college meet. So, there's some unchartered territories but we felt like there was a lot of benefits early season," head coach
Andrew Basler said. "We had some good results, some not so good, and some in the middle. We try to remind our team that it is early and keep perspective."
Freshman
Bishop Bufford had a solid debut for the black and gold, placing seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 12.93 meters and 12th in the long jump at 6.03 meters.
Joining Bufford in the long jump was
Tim Maidment, who led MKE with a 6.21-meter leap and
Tony Bretall right behind in 6.12 meters.
In the weight throw,
Caleb Rogalski turned in a program top-10 mark at 17.51 meters to place seventh.
Gracien Jules also finished top 10 with a distance of 16.92 while
Finnegan Shields finished 12th (14.02 meters).
Milwaukee's high jump duo of
Bryant McLaughlin and
Chris Dobbie each turned in a top-10 finish in their first event of the season. McLaughlin reached 1.90 meters to finish fourth while Dobbie turned in a height of 1.80 to place seventh.
On the track, the Panthers were well-represented in the 400-meter with three in the top 10.
Caleb Henry crossed in 49.76 to place fourth followed closely by
Caleb Anderson (49.90) and
Zachary Schmidt (49.96).
"I thought on the track side, the 400-meter group ran well," Basler said. "We had three guys under 50 seconds so that was really good."
Golden Cotton paced in sprints, reaching the finals with an eighth-place time of 6.91 in the 60-meter prelims.
Freshmen
Isaac Dauffenbach and
Nick Hottinger saw their first action for MKE on Friday. Dauffenbach crossed in 23.12 to place 10th in the 200-meter while Hottinger finished 10th in the 300-meter at 37.99.
Following a holiday break, Milwaukee will return to the track on January 14 at the Midwest Invite hosted by Wisconsin.
