TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Milwaukee women's track and field team placed second out of six teams at the John Gartland Invitational on Saturday, finishing with 128.50 points.
Southern Illinois won the meet with 169.50 points, finishing ahead of Milwaukee. Southeastern Missouri finished third with 116 points with host school Indiana State just behind with 114 points.
The Panthers recorded four individual victories at the meet, including a first-place finish from
Natalie Block in the 60-meter hurdles. Block, after posting a school record in the pentathlon on Friday, ran to a time of 8.53 seconds in the event. Adrienne Burton finished third in the same event, recording a time of 9.04 seconds.
"I thought our women's hurdles performed really well," head coach
Andrew Basler. "
Natalie Block was just off her school record and Emma Burton and
Katie Sciarini had lifetime bests as well."
Milwaukee saw several field athletes post impressive finishes, including
Annie Guerrero, who leaped to 1.65 meters in the high jump for first.
Kate Watson placed first in the pole vault at 3.87 meters, and
Maddy Troy finished first in the long jump with a mark of 5.75 meters.
"
Kate Watson in the pole vault had some looks at the school record at 13 feet." Basler commented. "So good for her to see those attempts and real close at making those."
Troy also had a strong performance in the 60-meter dash, placing second with a time of 7.67 seconds.
Dominique Thomas was close behind, finishing third at 7.76 seconds.
Courtney Hoppe ran to a time of 1:00.77 in the 400-meter dash, tallying with a second-place finish.
Milwaukee will host the annual Tierney Classic next Saturday inside the Klotsche Center. The meet will begin at 10 a.m.
"We mixed it up really well with the teams we were competing against this weekend and had quite a bit of event winners so we can take away some momentum from this and get to settle into our home track next weekend," Basler said. "We get to have a little rivalry with some of the local schools in Marquette and Wisconsin Lutheran so hopefully we can get everyone healthy and competing."
