IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Milwaukee men's track and field team opened the 2022 indoor season this weekend at the Hawkeye Invitational, posting several strong performances across several events.
The Panthers found success in many of the field events, led by
Austin Wallace who finished first in the long jump with a mark of 7.52m. The distance tied the Milwaukee school record and set a Hawkeye Invitational record as well.
Obi Iwuagwu placed fourth in the same event with a distance of 7.24m.
"The men's jumps did well," head coach
Andrew Basler said. "Wallace tied the school record in the long jump and
Obi Iwuagwu had a lifetime best just behind him."
Dylan Sieloff had a strong showing in the pole vault, finishing fifth at 4.75m.
Evan Bartelsen placed ninth at 4.30m. In the high jump,
Jack Misky was 10th overall with a distance of 1.80m.
"
Dylan Sieloff had an outstanding day in the pole vault," Basler said. "He had about a seven-inch PR which was a big jump for him, so I'm excited to watch his progression after starting out strong."
In the running events,
Trevor Wenzel tallied a lifetime best in the 3000m run, finishing with a time of 8:31.55, good for second. Milwaukee saw other distance runners find success as well, with
Jack Fitzgerald (4:20.16) and
Hunter Krepline (4:20.16) finishing 11th and 12th, respectively, in the one-mile run.
Sam Conger led the way in the hurdles for the Panthers, posting a time of 8:03 seconds to place eighth.
"Conger continues to show what he is capable of in the hurdles and had a great time today," Basler commented. "Wenzel ran a really good 3K race and ran a tough race while finishing with a lifetime best."
The Panthers return to action next week when they travel to Indiana State for the John Gartland Invitational. The two-day meet begins Friday at 5:15 p.m. and continues Saturday at 10 AM.
"We're looking forward to Indiana State," Basler said. "It'll be a new venue for us, just like this weekend at Iowa was. Looking to build off the marks that we established today."
