MKE Men Get Past UIC In Pool, 139-101

Panthers win season opener

MILWAUKEE – Led by wins from Daniel Jablonski and Zach McClellan and two from Mason Schoof, the Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team claimed a 139-101 victory over UIC Sunday at the Klotsche Natatorium.

"We have been practicing together since September, but when you inject somebody else, you inject that competition and we saw time drops everywhere," head coach Kyle Clements said. "It makes such a big difference. UIC brought a smaller lineup and I appreciate them being here, but we needed that little boost. We have been working so hard and it's hard to find that motivation to be faster on a day-in and day-out basis, and that catalyst of having someone else here pushed us to that next level today."

Schoof took home wins in the 200 backstroke and the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in 1:54.13 in the back and 1:44.28 in the freestyle.

Jablonski claimed the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.80, while McClellan came through with the win in the 200 IM in a time of 1:59.13. McClellan was also second in the 200 backstroke, finishing in 1:58.05.

"It was across the board. We had so many different winners today," Clements said. "Mason (Schoof) won the 200 free and 200 back – so many individual performances were great today. I am just so happy that they get to see their hard work pay off today."

Both relay teams took first, with the 200 medley squad opening the day with a come-from-behind win in 1:47.84 and the 400 free relay team closing out the afternoon with a victory in 3:08.86.

Jay Jensen topped the MKE distance swimming efforts, taking second in both the 500 free (4:47.98) and the 1,000 free (9:58.44). Jonathan Kollen took second in both the 50 free (22.03) and was edged out in the 100 (47.88 to UIC's 47.75).

Danny Larson gave Milwaukee a one-two punch in the 200 free, with his time of 1:44.61 just edged by Schoof's 1:44.28.

In diving, the Panthers were led by Jared Kleczka, placing second in both the one-meter (317.85) and three-meter (304.20).

Up next, the team will have some time to prepare for its next meet, hitting the pool March 7 at Green Bay.
