Harper, Manning Sweep League Field Honors

Duo helped Milwaukee to big showing in first meet of the year

MILWAUKEE – Alisha Harper and Jamar Manning of the Milwaukee track & field team have swept the Men's and Women's Horizon League Field Athlete of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.

The duo was part of a dominant showing for Milwaukee at their first meet of the season – Whitewater's Karl Schlender Invite – that saw the Panthers take first or second a combined 23 times overall in just 21 events.

This marks the fourth time Harper has been recognized as the league's athlete of the week, while the honor is the first for Manning in his collegiate career.

The two-time Horizon League long jump champion, Harper continued to show she's one of the league's best in Milwaukee's opener. She recorded a jump of 5.67m (18-7 1/4) on her final approach to win the event by nearly a full foot. That mark is also the early standard in the league by the same margin. Harper also ran in the 200m Saturday, coming in third place in 27.36.

Meanwhile, Manning started the 2018 indoor season with a bang for Milwaukee, finishing as one of six first-place winners for the Panther men on Saturday. He opened things up with a dominating showing in weight throw with a PR toss of 17.33m (56-10 1/4) to take the top spot by a large margin. Impressively, his throw now ranks him fourth all-time in Panther history following the first meet of his junior season. It also is the best throw in the league thus far by nearly three feet. Manning later also competed in shot put, taking seventh place at 13.54m (44-5 1/4).

UWM returns to action this Saturday when they host their first of two home meets at the Klotsche Center. Marquette, Loyola and UIC come to campus for the annual Tierney Classic Saturday with field events starting at 10am.
