The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team dropped three of its first five events but regrouped nicely and grabbed 11 wins in 16 events in a convincing 168-130 win over the University of Chicago Saturday at the Myers-McLoraine Pool.
Milwaukee got wins from eight different individuals and one more from a relay team in their second meet in four days.
Freshman Tim Halverson picked up his first collegiate victory, winning the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:43.84, just beating out Mike Brady (second, 4:45.45) and Ryan Finke (third, 4:47.87).
Sophomore Mike Lucchesi also picked up his first win as a Panther, taking the top spot in the 100 butterfly at 50.62. David Dvorak came in second at 52.73. Dvorak also won an event on the day, touching the wall first in the 50 free with a winning time of 21.71 seconds. Brady was second at 21.86.
In diving, freshman Will Sass also picked up the first win of his collegiate career. The Elm Grove native topped the field in the one-meter diving with a collegiate-best score of 284.85. Sass also led the way on the three-meter board, taking third at 287.05, also a collegiate best.
Kenny Stelpflug posted his second-straight strong showing in the 1000 free. Stelpflug won the distance event with a time of 9:42.82, just shy of the season-best time he posted earlier this week. Junior Chris Jenkyns was second with a season-best time of 9:45.15.
Jenkyns later won the 200 back, cruising to victory at 1 minute, 53.57 seconds. Junior Jeff Maxwell was second at 1:59.28.
Nathan Welchlin won a pair of events on the day. The senior first topped the field in the 200 fly at 1:50.36. Finke was second at 1:55.46. Welchlin also won the 100 free at 45.86, the second-fastest time by a Panther this season. Senior Sam Niesen was second at 47.25.
Nic Halverson also grabbed two victories on the day. The freshman won the 200 free (1:43.89) just in front of Lucchesi (1:45.06) before finishing atop the podium in the 400 IM with a time of 4:09.16.
In the final event of the day, Mike Schalla teamed up with Niesen, Welchlin and Brady to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:07.00, almost a full 10 seconds in front of second place.
Milwaukee diving returns to the pool next week at the UIC Diving Invitational Saturday, Jan. 26, while the swimming team is off until its final regular-season meet at conference rival Green Bay Saturday, Feb. 2.
