GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Milwaukee women's cross country program finished in sixth place at the Phoenix Open Saturday afternoon, competing at the Shorewood Cross Country Course. 

The Panthers ended Saturday's race with 129 points, paced by the likes of Janiyah Taylor. The sophomore continued to shine after a strong showing last weekend, earning 16th place with a time of 23:29.4 in her first 6K race of the year. 

A trio of freshmen followed for Milwaukee, as Mariah Wondra, Avery Sommer and Grace Storjohann made up over half of the scorers for the Panthers in Green Bay. Wondra completed the course in 23:35.4, while Sommer remained close behind with a final time of 23:50.4. Both runners finished within the top-25. 

Storjohann earned 47th with a time of 24:26.0 in her first 6K competition of her collegiate career. 

Isabella Switalski was the fifth and final scorer for the Panthers, notching a 56th-place finish with a time of 24:43.1.

"Our women are gritty, gutsy, and aren't afraid to race," head coach Andrew Basler said. "These are all qualities that will continue to grow this team each week they race."

Madison Krueger, Abbey Schultz and Morgan Dewey each completed their first 6K races of their career, too. 

"I think the big picture perspective with our women's squad is patience and trusting the process," Basler said. "Six of our top-7 are underclassmen, and we had six women running their first 6K ever. With a young team of hungry athletes, it's important for them to be patient and allow the training to build their performances as the season progresses." 

Milwaukee will enjoy a week off from competition before returning to action Friday, Sept. 25. The Panthers are slated to race in Milwaukee for the first and only time this season, participating in Marquette's Jim Allen Classic. The women's race is set to start at 1:00 p.m. CT from Veterans Park.
