Panthers Finish 11th at Horizon League Championships

Taylor paces Milwaukee in postseason opener

October 31, 2026

CLINTON, Pa. - The Milwaukee women's cross country team finished in 11th place at the Horizon League Championships Saturday morning, tallying 284 points as a unit.

"Heading into the championship, we were focused on moving up as a program," head coach Andrew Basler said. "Looking just at the end results, this is not where we wanted to finish. From an outsider's perspective, it may not look like there was much movement for us. Even for our own athletes, it may feel and appear there is no growth. But as coaches, we can see the big picture perspective. There is movement happening in the right direction for both our men and women, and we can hang our heads high on that fact."

Janiyah Taylor was the leader for the Panthers at the Youthtowne Fields, turning in a time of 22:17.20 in the 6K competition to take 29th.

Following behind, Mariah Wondra put together a personal best in the 6K with a time of 22:34.32. The Bonduel, Wis. native finished in 40th.

Avery Sommer, Isabella Switalski and Grace Storjohann rounded out the scorers for Milwaukee. Sommer paced the trio with a 76th-place finish, while Switalski and Storjohann earned 88th and 90th, respectively.

"Our top-3 ran very solid on an honest course. I'm sure she is disappointed, but Janiyah Taylor ran a gritty race to lead our ladies. Mariah Wondra ran close to a 25-second PR to continue her strong freshman campaign. Even though she wasn't feeling 100% healthy, Avery Sommer was just off of a lifetime PR."

The host team, Robert Morris, went on to secure the Horizon League Championship with 32 team points. Youngstown State, last year's champion, tallied 33 to finish as the runner-up in the conference.

Milwaukee will set its sights on the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, taking place Friday, Nov. 13. The meet will be hosted by Michigan State from East Lansing, Mich., as races will get underway at 9:00 a.m. CT from Forest Akers Golf Course.

"We will evaluate the health and efforts of the group this next week before deciding on our travel roster to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional," Basler said.
