Lorenz’s Historic Win Highlights Record-Breaking Day for Panthers

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Milwaukee swim & dive teams competed in day three of the Horizon League Championships hosted by IU Indy in the IU Natatorium.
 
With one day left of championship action, the women currently sit second with 455 points, while the men rank fourth with 295 points.
 
The Panther men were led by Sam Lorenz who won the 100 backstroke in record fashion. On top of setting a new program record, Lorenz bested the previous Horizon League Championships record which was set by Cleveland State's Philipp Sikatzki in 2016. Lorenz's time of 45.81 grants him an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
 
A program record-setting performance was also recorded by Caleb Carlisle who finished runner-up in the 100 Butterfly. Carlisle clocked a personal-best time of 46.67 in the event.
 
Also finishing runner-up was Gunnar Seversen who shaved over four seconds off his previous career-best performance in the 400 IM. He was under a second behind the winning swimmer from Oakland, turning in a program-best 3:49.05 effort.
 
Andrew Jones competed well in the 100 Breaststroke, securing sixth place with his career-best 53.89 outing.
 
The Panther men delivered the fourth program-record performance of the day in the 400 medley relay where Lorenz, Jones, Carlisle, and Seversen clocked a time of 3:09.90, finishing third.

Maddi Hayashi got the Panther women rolling in the finals portion of the meet, winning the 100 butterfly. Hayashi clocked a personal-best time of 54.88 in the event.
 
Gabrielle LePine secured the championship victory for the second straight year in the 100 breaststroke. She touched wall in 1:01.68 which was over 1.5 seconds faster than the next swimmer.
 
Hayashi and LePine joined forces, along with Mara Freeman and Christiana Brooks, in the 400 medley relay. The team won the event, clocking a time of 3:41.26.
 
The podium finishes continued for the Panthers, with Freeman and Brooks both ending in the top-5 of the 100 backstroke. Freeman turned in a runner-up performance (54.51), while Brooks secured fifth (55.12). Both members of the Black & Gold recorded new personal bests in the event.
 
In the 400 IM, Erika Thomas finished second with her 4:23.56 outing. Natalie DiProspero was not far behind, securing fifth place with her career-best 4:28.35 effort.
 
Kristina Wittmann put together a solid performance in the 1-meter dive finals. Wittmann received a score of 253.80, nabbing fifth place.

Milwaukee will wrap up championship action in the fourth day of the Horizon League Championships held in Indianapolis, Ind., Saturday. The prelims will begin at 9:00 a.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.
