INDIANAPOLIS – The Horizon League announced that a pair of Milwaukee Panthers were named the league's Players of the Week. Junior
Charlie Marion was named Batter of the Week while redshirt-junior
Gavin Theis was named Pitcher of the Week.
Â
Marion led Milwaukee with seven RBIs a week ago, including two apiece in each of the team's three games against Oakland over the weekend. He hit .333 with five hits in 15 at bats with three of his hits coming for extra, including a home run in each of the team's two wins over the Golden Grizzlies.
Â
During his first season with the Panthers, Marion is hitting .278 entering play this week with 32 hits and 34 RBIs. He is currently tied for the team lead with eight home runs and has a team-best 11 doubles. He is also among the team leaders with 23 runs scored and is tied for the team lead with 21 walks.
Â
Theis put together one of his best collegiate outings in Milwaukee's win over Oakland on Friday afternoon. The right-hander tossed a career-best 8 2/3 shutout innings and tied his career-best mark with eight strikeouts as he earned his sixth win of the season. Theis held the Grizzlies to just a .200 batting average as he scatted six hits and walked three batters in the win.
Â
His first time through Horizon League play, Theis has set the tone for each weekend set with a series-opening win as he is 5-0 through league play with an impressive 2.23 ERA, lowering his overall season ERA to 3.51. He has registered 43 strikeouts through his nine starts in 2025 and walked just 19 batters over his league-leading 51 1/3 innings pitched.
Â
This is the second time that a Panther pitcher has been named Pitcher of the Week following
Aric Ehmke, who earned honors just a week ago. This is also the second time in Theis' career that he has been named Pitcher of the Week after being named the award winner in the final week of the 2024 season on May 20.
Â
This is the 10th time in Milwaukee baseball history that the Panthers have swept the weekly awards, since the league split the weekly honors into two separate awards beginning in the 1996 season. The last occurrence took place
Apr. 9, 2018, when
Matt Quartel was named Batter of the Week and
Austin Schulfer earned Pitcher of the Week accolades.
Â
Milwaukee plays this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Franklin Field in a non-conference matchup against UIC. The Panthers will resume Horizon League play on Thursday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. to start a three-game series with the Youngstown State Penguins.
