Szepieniec Takes Pentathlon Crown at Mastodon Invitational

January 17, 2025

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Milwaukee Track & Field had its multi-event athletes competing at Purdue Fort Wayne's Mastodon Invitational on Friday afternoon.

Four Panthers are scheduled to compete at the event and put forth valiant efforts, with the pair from the women's track & field team taking the top two positions on the final leaderboard in the pentathlon. Partway through the men's heptathlon, the pair of Panther entries are in position to do the same.

Anna Szepieniec put together a dominant showing in the pentathlon, winning three of the five events to cruise to a first-place finish with 3,746 points, the third-best score in school history.

Kallie Volk added her own impressive performance scoring 3,431 points, finishing second to Szepieniec.

"Anna and Kallie competed very well in this early season pentathlon, a goal coming into today was a school record for Anna and a lifetime best for Kallie," said head coach Andrew Basler. "Anna left some critical points out on the track, but still came up just shy of the record. Kallie had an up and down day but still came away with a sizable lifetime best."

Szepieniec started the day strong, winning the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.91 to set the tone for the afternoon. Volk followed that up by claiming the best result in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.63m.

After a strong showing in the shot put where Szepieniec finished second (10.56m), and Volk fourth (10.09m), Szepieniec won the long jump reaching 5.69m, followed by Volk in third at 5.29m.

The afternoon ended for the pair with a one-two finish in the 800m run with Szepieniec leading the way at 2:24.84, and Volk finishing at 2:32.38.

The men's heptathlon saw the first four of seven events contested on Friday, with the remaining three events scheduled to be finished on Friday.

Liam Richards has been outstanding through four events, coming out in first place in each one and holding the overall lead at 2,924 points. He opened the day posting a time of 7.09 in the 60m dash and followed it up in the long jump at 6.65m. Continuing in the shot put, Richards had his best throw go 12.34m, before wrapping up his day in the high jump clearing 12.34m.

Richards heads into Saturday with a 420-point cushion over his next closest competitor representing host Purdue Fort Wayne.

"I was happy with the way things in day one of the heptathlon went, Liam had an amazing day especially in the high jump. He set himself to eclipse over 5100 points as a just a sophomore." Basler finished saying.

Freshman Nick O'Halloran, competing in his first multi-event competition at the collegiate level, has amassed 1,920 points and is currently in third place heading into Saturday.

The heptathlon will conclude tomorrow starting with the 60m hurdles at 9:00 a.m., followed by the pole vault at 9:40 a.m. and ending with the 1000m run at 11:30 a.m.
