MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee men's & women's track & field teams will take on the field of Horizon League competition as the teams will compete for the 2023 Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Youngstown State University.

The women's program is coming off a runner-up finish at the indoor championships, while the men took third place in Fort Wayne in late February.

The three-day championship meet will begin for the Panthers at 11:00 a.m. (CT) on Friday, May 5 as the women's and men's discus will begin in conjunction with the decathlon. The heptathlon will also start shortly after, before men's and women's javelin begins at 3:00 p.m. (CT). Running events will kick off at 6:20 p.m. (CT) with the 1500m prelims followed by the 10,000m run.

On Saturday, competition will begin at 8:00 a.m. (CT) with the conclusion of the decathlon, followed by the second and final day of the heptathlon shortly after. Field events will continue throughout the day, while track competition will begin with the 100m hurdles and the 110m hurdles around 3:00 p.m. (CT).

The third and final day of the championship meet will also start at 8:00 a.m. (CT) on Sunday, with the high jump and triple jump, before the hammer throw will wrap-up field events for the weekend. Running events will start off with the 4x100m relays at 11:00 a.m. (CT), with the final events of the weekend coming in the form of the 4x400m relays shortly after 3:00 p.m. (CT).

The Vitals
The event will be hosted on the campus of Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio, with tickets available at the event at either spectator entrance. Day passes are available at $15 for adults, and $5 tickets for children 12 and under, and seniors 65 and up. Weekend passes will also be available at $25 for all ages and will cover all three days.

Children under the age of five will be admitted free of charge, while students of Horizon League institutions will also be admitted free of charge with valid identification.

Scouting the Field
Youngstown State has hoisted the trophy at the last three contested men's track & field championships, while the Penguin women have won the last eight contested titles.

Milwaukee's men lead the Horizon League with 16 titles, while the women's team has won seven, second to the 14 crowns won by Youngstown State.
Â
On the men's side Youngstown State was tops in the league during the indoor championships followed by Oakland, who finished just ahead of Milwaukee. Detroit Mercy was fourth followed by Purdue Fort Wayne, Northern Kentucky, IUPUI and Wright State in eighth.

At the women's championship during the indoor season Youngstown State edged the Panthers by just four points, while Oakland was third followed by Purdue Fort Wayne and Northern Kentucky in the top-five. IUPUI, Robert Morris, Detroit Mercy and Wright State rounded out the nine-team field.

Defending the Belt
At last spring's Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Milwaukee had four individual champions on the women's side all coming in field events.
Annie Guerrero won the high jump at 1.68 meters, while
Nadia Vo was the champion in the long jump at 5.86m and
Morgan Pilate took home the title in the triple jump at 12.20m.
Tabitha Wechlo was the champion in the shot put at 14.67 meters.

The men's team has two returning individual champions from last year's championship meet hosted by Oakland.
Golden Cotton won the 200m dash with a time of 21.77, while
Caleb Rogalski was the champion in the hammer throw at 56.28 meters.

All-Time Panther Marks
The Panthers own five all-time marks in men's track & field at the outdoor championships with Tyler Bucholz setting the championship marks in the 200m and 400m dashes in 2010. The Panthers are also the Horizon League all-time leaders in both the 4x100m relay in 2007, and the 4x400m relay in 2009. Dan Simon also owns the decathlon mark with 5,926 points accomplished in 2013.

Milwaukee also owns two all-time marks at the Horizon League Championships on the women's side as Samia Taylor set the triple jump mark in 2011 at 12.83 meters, while Shelby Schaal set the league mark in the heptathlon with a score of 5,034.

Welcome to Y'Town
This will be the fifth time in Horizon League history that Youngstown State will host the outdoor conference championships, having previously hosted in 2008, 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2021.

The conference championships have been hosted in Indianapolis on 11 occasions, including the first 10 from 1998 to 2007, before hosting again in 2011. Milwaukee has hosted the outdoor championships once, with that coming back in 2012.

Athlete of the Week Recaps
Milwaukee has had four student-athlete earn weekly accolades from the Horizon League during the outdoor season with
Annie Guerrero and
Lauren Lietzke earning Field Athlete of the Week, with Guerrero being selected on April 11, while Lietzke earned the honor on April 25.

Golden Cotton was a two-time Horizon League Runner of the Week earning the title on both April 18, as well as the final week of the season on May 2.
