Cotton Sets 200m; Ties 100m Dash Records at Gibson Invitational

April 15, 2023

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee men's track & field team wrapped up its three-day visit to the Gibson Invitational at Indiana State as well as the Green & White Invited hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran.

The Panthers took fourth at Indiana State with a team point total of 68 points, while Milwaukee finished fifth at Wisconsin Lutheran as the Panthers totaled 57 points.

"I think overall we took some good strides forward as a program," said head coach Andrew Basler. "We had some good weather and good competition."

Gibson Invitational Summary
The story of the day was Golden Cotton, who moved up into sole possession of first place in the men's 200m dash with a time of 20.82 besting his previous career-best mark of 21.24 set at last year's Horizon League Outdoor Championship. The previous career-best was held by Trentin Edwards at 21.02 set back during the 2007 season.

That's not all though as Cotton also eclipsed his season and career-best mark of 10.57 set last weekend by tying the all-time program mark at 10.45 in the 100m dash joining Ashley Bronk, who set the initial mark during the spring of 1996.

"Golden has been very motivated after last year and we're really proud of how he stepped up today," said Basler. "With it only being the second meet of the outdoor season, they'll be a lot more from him moving forward."

More top all-time performances came in the pole vault as Dylan Sieloff was second in the pole vault at 4.91 meters, while Evan Bartelsen was third at an identical height of 4.91 meters. The pair took over a tie for third place on the program's all-time outdoor pole vault list. With the record currently at 5.15m set back in 2011.

A lot of positives for the Panthers also came from the jump pit as Anthony Campbell backed up his record-setting performance from a week ago with a victory in the long jump as he reached 7.35m this week. Will Mortimer was second in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 14.06m, Mortimer also had a PR in the long jump at 6.66m. Bishop Bufford made it another PR for the Panthers with a 13.76m jump in the triple.

Rounding out the field events was Caden Thomas leading the Panthers in the high jump at 1.90 meters, while Jack Misky had a personal-best in the event at 1.75 meters.

It was Caleb Rogalski to lead the way for Milwaukee in both the shot put and the discus, as he connected on a 16.23-meter throw in the shot while registering a 52.89-meter throw in the discus.

Dane Nelson led Milwaukee in 110m hurdles with a 14.64 to qualify for the finals, before finishing in sixth position in the finals with a 14.81. Nelson also took sixth in the 400m hurdles at 55.63.

Caleb Anderson trailed Cotton in the 100m dash but did have a PR against a tough field of competition at 10.88 seconds. Anthony Kessler had career bests in both the 100m dash at 10.91 as well as the 200m dash at 22.16 seconds.

Zac Schmidt led the black and gold in the 400m dash with a personal-best time of 49.09, while Nate Griepentrog also had a PR time as he led Milwaukee in the 800m run at 1:57.05.
