Panthers Complete Weekend Sweep, Win First Conference Meet of the Season

October 29, 2023

INDIANAPOLIS – The Milwaukee women's swimming and diving program swept the competition on Saturday in their first conference tri-meet of the year. The Panthers bested reigning Horizon League runners-up IUPUI 155.5-142.5 and followed that up with a 178-120 win over Cleveland State.

The Panthers put together yet another strong early-season showing, winning six events and scoring in multiple others.

"It was a good trip for us down to Indy," head coach Kyle Clements commented. "We didn't get done with our meet until 7 PM Friday night and we pulled away from campus to head to Indianapolis less than twelve hours later.

"In any circumstances Saturday was not going to be easy," Clements continued. "But we made the most out of it and came home with some things to work on, some fast times, and some wins."

Carly Plate contributed to two wins on the day, grabbing an individual first in the 50 yard backstroke and helping the 200 yard freestyle relay team to a win. Plate also took second in the 100 yard backstroke and was a part of the second-place 400 yard medley relay team.

Johanna Edgren had a big meet of her own, placing second in the 50 yard butterfly while winning the 100 yard race. Nhia Caras was the first to touch the wall in the 50 yard freestyle, and placed third in the 100 yard butterfly, right behind Edgren. Caras was also a part of the first-place 200 yard freestyle relay team.

Julie Rebek had a strong showing on the diving boards, placing third in both the 1 meter and 3 meter events, with scores of 253.3 and 247.4.

Janelle Schulz put together a quality meet, highlighted by a top finish in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 52.88 seconds. Schulz also placed second in the 200 yard IM and was the anchor leg for the second-place 400 yard medley relay team.

Mara Freeman took first in the 100 yard backstroke and third in the 50 yard backstroke, winning the 100 yard by nearly half of a second.

Noelle Bryan and Brielle Laube joined Plate and Caras to take the 200 yard freestyle relay crown, while Plate and Schulz were joined on the second-place 400 yard medley relay team by Ava Schlageter and Erika Thomas.

The Panthers are back at the Klotsche next weekend for a two meet homestand, hosting Davenport University and Wheaton College. Davenport will be in town for a 3 PM meet on Friday, and Milwaukee will face Wheaton at 1 PM on Saturday.
