MINNEAPOLIS – Following a strong early showing on Friday, the Milwaukee men's track and field program capped off its weekend at day two of the Jack Johnson Classic hosted by the University of Minnesota on Saturday afternoon.
"Overall, our team had a lot of fight with some events, and we did well overall", said head coach
Andrew Basler. "We have a lot of positives moving forward and we're looking forward to having a day trip next weekend to see some in-state competition."
Multi-Event
"
Austin Wallace had a great time in the 60m hurdles and had a personal-best in the pole vault", said Basler. "He did really well and should be towards the top of the national leaders following this weekend in the heptathlon."
Following the first four events on Friday evening, Wallace finished off the weekend with a personal-best in the pole vault and 4.40 meters; while also recording a time of 2:48.82 in the 1000m. In his 60m hurdles, Wallace set a new meet record at the Jack Johnson Classic with a time of 8.08 to eclipse the previous mark of 8.12 set back in January of 2018.
Tony Bretall had an 8.80 in the 60m hurdles and a distance of 4.20 meters in the pole vault in his heptathlon as he builds his scores for the Horizon League Championships in late February.
Track Events
"
Chris Hudnall had a really well in the prelims and
Dane Nelson performed well in finals in the hurdles," said Basler. "
Trevor Wenzel did well in the 3000m, while
Nate Griepentrog ran really well the 800m"
Hudnall had an 8.07 in the 60m hurdles to qualify for the finals as he set a new personal record in the process; he followed that up with an 8.14 in the finals for the fourth-place finish. Nelson had an 8.24 in the finals as he took home a sixth-place finish.
In sprints,
Golden Cotton picked up a time of 6.90 in the 60m dash and led all Panther finishers in the 200m at 22.31, while
Caleb Anderson had a 50.56 in the 400m. In addition to Cotton in the 200,
Anthony Kessler took 10th with a personal-best 22.72, while
Isaac Dauffenbach registered a 23.06, Hudnall also had a person-best in the 200m at 23.61.
Wenzel picked up the win in the 3000m with a time of 8:390.26; while
Carter Eckhoff set a new personal-best in the mile at 4:21.61. Griepentrog crossed the finish line in sixth position in the 800m with a time of 1:57.63.
The track events were capped off in the 4x400 with Anderson,
Caleb Henry, Nelson and Dauffenbach taking seventh place with a time of 3:28.74.
Field Events
"
Anthony Campbell had a season-best and looked really good at the next height and he's in a really good position in the high jump," Basler noted.
Campell was fifth in the high jump at 2.02 meters, with
Bryant McLaughlin 10th at 1.92 meters.
Dylan Sieloff had a height of 4.78 meters in the pole vault to take sixth in the field, with
Evan Bartelsen one position behind in seventh with a height of 4.63 meters.
Will Mortimer was the only entry in the men's triple jump this weekend, with the senior collecting a distance of 13.38 meters to finish in sixth position.
Caleb Rogalski chalked up another two top-five finishes as he was second in the shot put at 16.48 meters and fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 17.65 meters.
Finnegan Shields took 11th in both of his events on Saturday, with a finishing distance of 14.69 in the shot put and a throw of 14.95 in the weight throw.
