Milwaukee Leads McCafferty Trophy Standings Following Fall Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – Milwaukee is in first place in the race for the 2022-23 McCafferty Trophy, given to the all-sports champion of the Horizon League, after the conclusion of the Horizon League fall championship season.

The Panthers have 16 total points after the fall championships, a 2.5-point lead ahead of Wright State, as they earned the regular season and tournament titles in women's soccer and also claimed their third-straight women's cross country championship. MKE holds a strong lead in the women's standings with 15 points, followed by WSU with 8.5 points. The men's standings are much tighter as IUPUI leads with eight points, followed by Cleveland State and Youngstown State with seven.

Wright State's second-place overall rank is boosted by its volleyball team earning the regular season and tournament crowns, while the men's soccer team earned the No. 2 seed for the championship. Youngstown State is in third place, just 0.5 points behind the Raiders, after winning the men's cross country championship, reaching its first women's soccer championship match and placing third at the League's women's cross country meet.

Boasting 10.5 points and in fourth place is Oakland after the men's and women's cross country teams both finished top-three at the championships in Rochester, Mich., while the men's and women's soccer teams each earned appearances in their respective League tournaments. The Jags are fifth in the overall standings led by the men's cross country team earning a runner-up finish at the championship and the men's soccer team earning a spot in the championship match. Following in the overall standings is Cleveland State and Purdue Fort Wayne tied for sixth place. The Vikings claimed their first regular season title and  second tournament championship in men's soccer and the Mastodons finished second in the regular season standings in women's soccer and had a third-place finish in men's cross country.

Northern Kentucky holds the eighth spot in the standings as a result of the volleyball team earning the No. 2 seed and a runner-up finish in the #HLVB championship. Green Bay sits in ninth place after its volleyball team battled to the semifinal round of the volleyball championship. RMU earned its first-ever appearance into the #HLMSOC championship to rank 10th overall in the standings.

Named in honor of James J. McCafferty, who served as the conference's first commissioner from 1979-80, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the Horizon League to the member institution that compiles the greatest number of performance points, based on its finish in the League's 19 championship sports.

For the sports of men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, softball and baseball, points are awarded based on combined regular-season (60 percent) and championship (40 percent) finishes. For all other sports, points are based on performance in the League championships.
