MILWAUKEE, Wis. –
Austin Wallace led a sweep of the podium for the Milwaukee men's track and field team as he won the heptathlon on Saturday afternoon. Wallace,
Tony Bretall, and
Trevor Coenen took the top three spots in the multi-event to pace the way for the Panthers.
"I think today felt a little more like typical track and field championships with both the ups and downs," head coach
Andrew Basler commeted. "I thought we started off really well today with the men's heptathlon sweeping the podium. I was really happy with them all weekend."
As a team, Milwaukee sits in second with 81 points, trailing Youngstown State, who holds first with 116 points.
Wallace took a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles to earn 920 points and also tied for second in the pole vault to cement the title. The sophomore totaled 4,879 points in the event.
Tony Bretall and
Trevor Coenen followed closely for Milwaukee, finishing second and third, respectively. It marked the first time since 2012 that the Panthers swept the podium in the heptathlon.
In the men's shot,
Gracien Jules and
Caleb Rogalski finished second and third, respectively, to earn 14 points for Milwaukee. Jules recorded a 16.32-meter toss while Rogalski finished with a 16.08-meter mark.
Wallace and
Obi Iwuagwu led the crew in the long jump, taking fourth and sixth for Milwaukee. Wallace grabbed fourth with a 6.97-meter mark while Iwuagwu recorded a leap of 6.84 meters.
Sam Conger put himself in solid position for the 60-meter hurdles as he topped the field with a 8.07-second run. Wallace was on his heels at 8.30 seconds.
Michael Gorman and
Golden Cotton each finished top four in the 60-meter dash preliminaries in preparation for Sunday's final.
In the 800-meter race,
Michael Sippy set the pace, finishing sixth with a time of 1:58.01. The finals are set for tomorrow afternoon.
