MILWAUKEE, Wis. –
Michael Gorman and
Meg Swietlik of the Milwaukee track and field team were named the Alfreeda Goff Indoor Athletes of the Year, announced by the league office on Friday.
Gorman shares the honor with Youngstown State's Sean Peterson while Swietlik won the award on the women's side.
It marks the second straight season a member of the Panthers' track and field team earned the honor after
Ashley Melvin corralled the award last season. It also marks the ninth and 10th indoor athlete of the year honors in the last 17 years for Milwaukee.
Gorman proved to be on the fastest in the league, setting new school records in both the 55-meter and 60-meter dashes. The sophomore opened the indoor season breaking Ashley Bronk's 1997 record with a 6.86-second finish in the 60-meter. One week later, Gorman broke it yet again with a 6.85-second finish at the John Tierney Classic.
On February 21, Gorman etched his name atop the record book once again, knocking off Bronk's 55-meter dash record from 1996 with a time of 6.34. In nine sprint events this season, Gorman earned six first-place finishes. He owns the Horizon League's fastest time in the 60-meter dash and second fastest time in the 200-meter dash.
Swietlik set new heights on the distance side, racing to a new school record in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 16:41.28. The senior topped Cheryl Konol's previous record of 16:44.21 which was set in 1982.
At the home Tierney Classic, Swietlik also raced to a first place finish in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 9:53.89 which sits as the sixth-fastest time in school history. She owns the Horizon League's top times in both the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter races.
The dynamic duo and the rest of the Panthers head to Fort Wayne, Indiana this weekend for the Horizon League Indoor Championships. Additional information and live coverage links can be found on
