Walstad, Johnson Earn Horizon League Honors

Johnson named to all-defensive team after record-breaking season

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's basketball team had a pair of players earn All-Horizon League honors, the conference office announced Tuesday morning. Ryaen Johnson was named to the Horizon League All-Defensive Team, while Megan Walstad was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team.

Johnson has had a breakout senior season. She earned a spot in the starting lineup early in the season and has been a force in the post all year. The senior has an incredible 72 blocks on the season – shattering the school record of 61 set just last year. Those 72 blocks ranks her 12th in the nation in total blocks, while her 2.5 blocks/game ranks her 17th in the NCAA. Her efforts have also helped Milwaukee amass a whopping 152 blocks as a team this season – by far a school record and just three shy of setting a new Horizon League mark. Johnson has also helped MKE's defense be on pace to break the school record for defensive shooting percentage – allowing teams to connect on just 36.4 percent of their shots so far, which ranks 34th best nationally. She also leads the team in rebounding at 5.7 boards/game.

Walstad has been a big part of Milwaukee's offense in just her first collegiate season. The Apple Valley, Minn., native leads the team in scoring with 10.8 points/game, shooting an impressive 54.6 percent on the season. She also ranks second on the Panther's squad in rebounding with 5.1 boards/game. She also has tallied 33 assists, 28 blocks and 24 steals in her first season on campus. Walstad was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week an impressive three times on the season and has scored in double figures in 18 of her 29 games, including an incredible 27-point performance in just 26 minutes on the court at Cleveland State just three weeks ago.

Johnson's honor marks the first time Milwaukee has had someone on the league's elite defensive list since Turquoise McCain back in 2007-08. Meanwhile, this marks the third time in the last five years MKE has had a representative on the all-freshman team.

Johnson, Walstad and the Panthers are now set to start the Horizon League Tournament, opening up with a quarterfinal matchup at Youngstown State Wednesday at 6 pm Central.
