Panthers Fall to Flames in Home Opener

Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee baseball team fell behind early in game one of the series against UIC Friday, falling 10-4 in the team's home opener from Henry Aaron Field.

A seven run second inning for UIC (9-11, 5-2) scorched Milwaukee (13-9, 4-3) early on, and was an inning that ultimately hurt the Panthers in the long run. UIC had four hits in the inning, but a throwing error led to all seven runs as unearned.

"It's a big climb to come back from when we're down 9-0 after two, especially against (Jacob) Keys, who's probably the best arm in the league," said head coach Scott Doffek. "I loved our fight though. We had some opportunities to put up a comeback, but just didn't have that big hit today."

Falling behind 10-0 after one and a half innings, the Panthers answered with three runs in the bottom  half of the inning.

Senior Colin Kreiter got MKE on the board first when he hit his second home run of the season over the right field fence. After a Mike Ferri walk, Matt Quartel followed suit and knocked in two more Panther runs with a shot over the right field fence to put the score at 10-3.

All the damage came in the second inning as the Milwaukee pitching staff put up zeros for the next six innings, and allowed just one run in the ninth.

In the bottom of the eighth, MKE threatened when the team got Tyler Bordner, Colin Kreiter and Jack Kraus on board on three straight walks, and one out. All momentum stopped there though when UIC's Sam Menegat got the next Panther to ground into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.

UIC's Jacob Keys held the Panthers to three runs on eight hits while striking out seven, and improve to 4-3 on the season.

MKE's Trevor Schwecke was the only multi-hit performer for the Panthers going 2-for-4.

The Panther will look to rebound in game two Saturday, March 30. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Henry Aaron Field.
