Freshmen Lead Milwaukee Past Wheaton

Panthers won 9 of 11 events on the day

MILWAUKEE – Four different freshmen won at least one event as the Milwaukee men's swimming team cruised to a 121-74 win over Wheaton College Friday afternoon from the Klotsche Natatorium.

The Panthers won nine of the 11 events on the day, with six of those wins coming from the freshman class.

"Tonight was a fun night," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Clements said. "It was nice to actually host another team in our pool and it was also very informative. It's been two weeks since we have raced anybody, and it was nice to see where everybody currently is 'time wise'.

"The confidence we gained tonight will help us face this year's biggest test in Wright State come Sunday."

Milwaukee got started strong, with a win right out of the gates. The all-freshman relay of Patrick Kelley, Timmy Greci, Sam Salganik and Bailey Bodart teamed up for the opening win in the 200 medley relay with a solid time of 1:37.61.

The Panthers then made it 2-for-2 with victory in the second event. Newcomer Jacob Fase topped the field in the 1000 freestyle in 9:58.72, with classmate Brian Boehm taking second in 10:17.24.

Andrew Kasper won both of his events on the night. The freshman brought home his first W in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:44.70, just knocking off classmate Ryan Scripp at 1:44.98. Kasper also claimed the top spot in the 100 free in 47.91, again just touching out a teammate, this time in Anthony Kolbus at 47.99.

Kelley continued the theme of the night by bringing home the gold in the 400 IM, cruising to a winning time of 4:07.15 – seven second ahead of the next swimmer.

Junior Max Ward and senior Nick Menninga also claimed wins for Milwaukee on the night, with Ward winning the 100 fly and Menninga the 50 free.

Justin Ogle brought home the individual victory of the night in the 100 breaststroke. The newcomer clocked in at 1:00.23 – an early season-best time.

UWM closed things out with a win in the 200 free relay, with Evan Kuker, Yev Foster, Ward and Menninga easily topping the field in 1:26.32.

Milwaukee is right back at it, hosting Wright State Sunday at noon from the Klotsche Natatorium.
