Seversen Earns Horizon League Men’s Swimmer of the Week Honors

School record, three first-place finishes garner league recognition

October 21, 2026

MILWAUKEE - After shattering a school record in the 200 IM and winning three events this past weekend, Gunnar Seversen was selected as the Horizon League Men's Swimmer of the Week, league officials announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Woodbury, Minn. native made history in his first competition of the season at the Wisconsin Showcase, turning in a time of 1:48.05 to break Patrick Kelley's (2020) previous record of 1:48.84.

Seversen went on to earn gold in the 400 IM and the 500 freestyle as well, securing three of Milwaukee's nine first-place finishes last Saturday at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center. The junior dominated both events, emerging victorious in the 400 IM by four seconds and the 500 freestyle by approximately 10. The Panthers won the event with 1,642.5 points as a unit.

This weekly award is the third that Seversen has tallied in his career, securing a pair last year in his sophomore campaign. Seversen now owns school records in six separate events after Saturday's showing.

Fans can catch Seversen and the Panthers at the UIC Triangular Saturday, Oct. 31. Milwaukee is set to battle conference foe IU Indy and host UIC at the Flames Natatorium in Chicago. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 10:30 a.m. CT.
